There seems to be an explosion of different speaker models. Eminence alone has Patriots, Ragin' Cajun, Swamp thing, Texas Heat and on and on. Now we are seeing the TT-112 and the PF-112. Seeing as how the basics are a frame, a voice coil, surround and paper (or other), how many ways can there be of shaping the response. I'm not looking for replies on what is your favorite speaker, I'd like to know how the manufacturers go about achieving what they claim is an identifiable signature sound (or response) for each.

I've been reading the driver design section of this handy Wikipedia page: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudspeaker
The amount of variables is actually pretty large: nature and characteristics of the suspensions both at the base and rim of the cone; cross-section (I did not know some use hexagonal coil wire) and gauge of the wire; material of the magnet structure, and how many poles (I swear I read something decades ago that the BW magnet has 8 poles, it only LOOKS like one magnet); cone material, and the list goes on.
The desired properties in a speaker tend to conflict with one another, so you have to decide where on the scale you want the compromise to fall.

Thanks Lane. I had considered wire size, magnet materials, and cone material. I had not thought much about suspension characteristics, although surround would play a part in that. I appreciate the info.

I saw one of the articles on the subject with a neat quote about the nature of the problem.
"The problem with making speakers is that physics is dogmatic."
