Topic: Blade VS Shoe Clinesmith pickup |

Hi, Im ordering a Clinesmith short scale cast aluminum steel and I can't decide wich pickup to choose. Both are great looking and Im sure sound amazing.
Im a big fan of Jerry Byrds but also Joaquin Murphey and Vance Terry. So its hard to choose between Rick or Bigsby sound!
Any advice, description or anything that can help me from Clinesmith owner would be very appreciated!

I have owned long scale versions of both. The difference between the pickups is not huge, subtle actually IMHO.
The shoe has a little more of an edge to it while the blade is a bit rounder. It's difficult to describe. I wouldn't describe one as Bigsby and the other as Rickenbacher.
I was in need of some cash and had to sell one. It really was a toss up. I kept the blade but I really was on the fence about it.
They are both amazing, the finest lap steels I've ever played. |

I can compare Clinesmith's Bigsby pickup to an original Rick pickup, but not Clinesmith's horseshoe pickup. For those two, I agree with Cartwright. The Rick has more cutting power and more pronounced high mids, while the Bigsby has a warmer sound with more pronounced low mids.
I went with the Bigsby pickup simply because I didn't have that sound already and vintage Ricks are not hard to find. It's hard to beat that sound when played through a vintage-style tube amp. |

I have a 10 string "plank" with a blade pickup and an 8 string cast guitar with the shoe. The shoe is a bit hotter and edgier as has been mentioned earlier. Theyre both great sounding pickups. The Clinesmith shoe is a lot fatter sounding than the Rick pickups to my ear. I have several old ricks and they are all a bit thinner and bright sounding than the Clinesmith. you wont go wrong with either.

It will be mine! So I go with the blade! Thanks guys for the infos.
I will be a very proud owner of this aluminum Clinesmith! Todd is a great guy to deal with, he is a great player and is instruments are incredible! I ordered a Clinesmith bar to go with my new steel! |
