There is definitely some overdubbing on some steel tracks. I think I asked Bobby about this at one point, but don't remember what he said. |

I LOVE THE STEEL GUITAR FORUM!!!!!!!
Thanks for the pictures, I really want a set of cloths like Bobby's! Do you think he looks happy to pick the guitar up and flip it over? _________________ RICK ABBOTT

I was hanging out with Bobby in '74 at Pete's Place (Window Music) and Deemen's Den. I think he was still playing his Bud then. Of course, Deemen's was across the street from Sho-Bud. I think he mihgt have switched to Emmons and moved back to California. |

Fantastic pics, Bas. Brings back more happy memories with Norton Buffalo dancing about the stage playing harmonica and then he and Bill K. doubling on trombone.
What a band!

I remember reading once,Billy C. Farlow got fired during the tour and their manager Rick Higgenbotham took over.
There is a book called:"Starmaking Machinery" about Commander Cody and the LPA.
I wrote the Commander:'George Frayne'a letter and he wrote me back sending me a record.
Great photo's Bas!
Norton Buffalo made two nice records. |

Thanks, Bas.
Olaf, more memories coming back to me now. Billy C. did not appear at the Glasgow concert. I assumed he was ill. I did not know he had left the band. When the live album came out, there he was singing his heart out. I think there was a week or two between the recording and the Glasgow show. I had read review in the Melody Maker which mentioned Bobby doing a version of Danny Boy. I was looking forward to the same thing, but unfortunately he didn't play it in Glasgow.

Just received a copy of Star Making Machinery the other day. I found it at Amazon. Hard cover and only 10 bucks! I can not wait to re-read it. I read it about 30 years ago and really enjoyed it _________________ Stage One PSG, Old Deluxe Reverb,Peavey Session 500,Nashville Telecaster, Alvarez Yari DY62 Cedar Top acoustic, Alvarez AJ-60-12 acoustic 12 string, Larivee OM-3 Acoustic, Harmony MOTS lap steel, Magnatone MOTS lap steel, Gibson BR-9 lap steel, Andy Hintons coated picks, Ernie Cawby's amp stand, Sharp Covers Nashville Amp and Guitar covers |

Thanks Archie for that YT link.
...let's not forget the great "Buffalo Bruce" on bass and the dynamically tasteful, Lance Dickerson [deceased] on drums. Those two worked together like salt & pepper.
Without rhythm, there is no music...just noise. _________________ Chip

Back on page one it was mentioned that Bobby's D-12s were stolen. How many mid-70's D-12s could there be on the planet? Sure, you see one now and again on the Forum, but not too many. I might search the For Sale and see how many have been sold over the years, just for kicks! _________________ RICK ABBOTT

Bit late getting back. I found out from George on FB that Billy C. had been sacked for stealing the takings from one of the gigs before Glasgow.

Gosh Archie, it's been 6 years, 7 months and 9 days since the last post. 2413 days.
Thanks for reviving this thread! I still love CC&LPA as much as I did then.
Finally, an answer to why Billy got canned. _________________ RICK ABBOTT

Saw CC back around '03 in a local bar here in Oldsmar, Florida, but he wasn't using a steel player that night.
Got to see BB with the New Riders at Queensboro Community College back in the early 70s, and it was the best the Riders ever sounded. (They were usually loose & sloppy in concert) The band that opened for them was a British Folk-rock band called "Tranquility", & if you YouTube them, you will hear the absolute BEST vocal harmony ever!
Don't remember what Bobby played; was not a steeler at the time, so wouldn't have known the difference. _________________ A couple D-10s,some vintage guitars & amps, & lotsa junk in the gig bag. |

I have relatives in San Jose CA. When I'd visit, I'd go down to the Saddle Rack where Bobby played regularly post CC.
I tell ya, he's a humble guy. Took the time to have lengthy steel guitar discussions with me.
Hope he doesn't mind here: He relayed a story about showing Jerry Garcia some PSG stuff. This was during the era when Playboy magazine had their "xxxxx of the year" recognition awards. (insert instrument). Apparently Jerry was so embarassed about getting the PSG award a few years in a row he gave up playing it for a while.
Saw Bobby at the PSG show in St Louis in the late 90s. He played lap steel only ......really well....but I wish he brought his PSG.
I think his horn section emulation on the the CC tune "Craving your Love" is pure genius. - pedals two and three (2minor) walked both up and down a whole step from the root.
I also like his solo album he caught crap for from the PSG community because some folks thought it was too rocknroll or something. I think those people are dead now - nuff said. |
