Jim Hall and Paul Desmond's 1965 LP Bossa Antigua has long been one of my all-time favorite records. Hall's voice leading was just beautiful and his comping concepts behind Desmond's gorgeous alto are sublime; my favorite time period of his long career. Recently, a member of the jazz guitar board posted the voicings Hall used for the intro and comping on the title tune.
Here's the intro and chord progression for the tune in C6th. Playing the exact notes Hall played is doable but a little tricky (even tuning string 6 to C#) for blocking so I changed it slightly and it works fine. Having the C on the bottom of Eb7 makes it a 13th - may be weird but sounds good to me - especially when you play a bossa comp as full chords. I just wrote it out in quarter notes rather than take the time to figure out and notate Hall's exact syncopated rhythms. 'Hope this is interesting to someone.

I bought Desmond/Hall box set years ago. I enjoy all kinds of music but their stuff zings my head AND heart in a special way.

Always loved Jim's playing. He also wrote a wonderful guitar book that every instrumentalist could benefit from. Paul Desmond is such a treat to listen to as well with his beautiful tone. Be sure to check out his work with Canadian guitarist Ed Bickert if you haven't already.

| It's very interesting. I studied jazz guitar for years starting as a boy - although rarely played it for anyone but myself. My favorite was always Wes Montgomery. And I always saw a similarity between jazz guitar chord voicing (especially in Wes' playing) and steel - and always loved both. |
