You freakin played the freakin VILLAGE VANGUARD ! You are now an official total badass and in the lexicon. Plus you obviously put something important in the air which is now blending into the molecules of that room along with Coltrane and the rest.

Congratulations to you and the group on the success of your appearance at the VV. I really like reading Bill's reviews because he writes directly on what he hears without using flowery descriptions and unnecessary personal recollections. I know he is a big fan of what you've done with your instrument.

It sounds like the leader, the band, and the compositions put on a great show! I'm very pleased you're getting some notice in some important places, and even more pleased you've been playing with strong, like minded and like hearted players, which can only help you continue to grow as a musician, the big lifelong goal.

You know something? I bought the Mary Halvorson Octet album and have been meaning to post something... but it's been competing with Debashish's new Hawaiian CD and the Allman Bros. at A&R Studios - in other words I have two of my PERSONAL three Mount McKinley-heads in heavy rotation. (Miles being head #3)
I think it's my favorite Alcorn album! Sorta like "Somethin' Else" by Cannonball Adderly is my favorite late 50's Miles Davis album, and my one (and onlyZ?!?) David Phillips CD is really a Jack West "Curvature" album. In trying to figure out how it was more accessible to my old fogey brain, I think the answer is: drums! I certainly support the right of people to play as free as they want, but it seems my OWN need is for something to hang my hat on whilst figuring out the curlicues & rococo-isms.* ANY peg I can find; the "best" of free jazz always had SOME aspect that was tied to earth, IMO.
It's a really, really good album, the writing and arranging is much tighter than one might expect from the past MH material. Ms. Halvorson has taken the jazz world by storm because she doesn't use the usual cliches, she's really PASSIONATE about her choices. And Susan fits like a glove, it's a bit like the Frisell/Leitz partnership I spoze. Just buy it. Anybody who can stare down Duane & Debashish - whoo-ee!
