Topic: Gibson Console Grande Strings |

Hello, I am an electric bass player who just inherited my father's 1955 Gibson Console Grande. I would like to learn how to play this beautiful instrument. It has not been played in years so new strings are in order.
Anyone care to make a string recommendation? It has two 8-string necks (assuming C6, E9). I appreciate any guidance or suggestions!!

| I just got a beautiful Console Grande as well....from this forum. Tuned closest neck to A6, far neck to C6. Strings are very close to pick up, and buzz a bit .... wondering if pedal steel vs lap steel strings, different gauges might make a difference. |

Is it an electrical buzz, or a mechanical one? The bridge grounding wire was the culprit on mine. When you are changing strings, carefully lift the bridge and sand the place where the wire touches, lift the wire and move it a 1/16 inch so it makes better contact. Fixed mine perfectly.
If it's the strings buzzing, or the guitar vibrating, you need to check the break-over points of each string, nut and bridge, and also see if there is a loose screw here or there.

Hi Mike,
Not E9th for a non pedal steel. Most use the E13th which is similar to E9th but best for the older C&W as well as Western swing.

I also was a bass player before taking up steel. Still sometimes I'm called on to play bass or rhythm guitar, but enjoy trying to get my steel chops in decent shape.
