Hi All,

I just returned from 8 days on the Big Island. On Hawaiian Airlines and other situations with pumped in music, I heard some Hawaiian music with steel guitar and female vocals. Very classic music, perhaps from the 40's to 60's, probably playing traditional songs. Beautiful steel playing that I'd like to listen to more and also absorb some technique. Can anyone recommend any available recordings of this kind of music, with electric steel guitar, not acoustic? I'm interested in the original recordings from 40+ years ago, not recent releases.

Many thanks in advance.

The "49th State" and "Waikiki" LPs were compilations of original recordings released on 78 rpm/45rpm. They were compilations because most artists did not record enough tracks for an LP under their own name. Among others "Waikiki" had...
Lovey Lui, Vicki Rodrigues, Emily de los Santos, Mona Joy, Pauline Kekahuna. Iolani Luahine.
Among others "49th State" had...
Dorothy Kalina & the K Sisters, Sally K Peters, Emma Bishop, Agnes Malabey, Nora K Santos, Lei Momi, Wenonah, Emma K Kinney, Alice Keawekane, Alice Johnson, Elsie Kupahu, Naughty Abbie, June Leite, Julia Nui, The Bee Sisters, Emma Bush, Flora Waipa, Genoa Keawe, Lei Momi Sweethearts.
These compilations turn up on eBay all the time, not real expensive although some people want WAY too much for the red vinyl pressings. Thing is you'll need a turntable because this stuff isn't on CD.
Also Myrna English and if you have access to Japanese LPs, Ethel Nakada, The Queen Sisters, and The Flower Sisters.

Wow! Very helpful. Thanks so much. Now I just have to find some of these. It sounds like there aren't re-issues of this stuff on CD that are easily obtainable.

I do have two turntables though.

Thanks

"Bell" label also, 78s and 45s, no LP compilations that I know of. Like "49th State" and "Waikiki', the artists only cut one or two sessions each. The market back then was jukeboxes, local radio, hula studios, and the tourists. Nobody was thinking about historical documentation. The "Bell" stuff is a little harder to find than the other two labels but not super rare either.
