Parametric EQ Pedal

My preferred tone is full-bodied, but now and then I want to kick up the twang for a song. It seems to me that a parametric equalizer stomp box would do the trick. I went looking for one, and there are surprisingly few available. Seems every effects box manufacturer has 3 or 4 different distortions but precious little in the EQ department.

The WMD Utility Parametric EQ ($199) looks good, and the Empress Effects ParaEQ ($249) gets rave reviews. There's also the Electro-Harmonix Tube EQ, which doesn't seem to be widely available - maybe discontinued.

Has anyone here tried any of these? Are there others I should be aware of?

bOb, any of the multi effect pedals would be able to do that. I've been using the digitech RP155 for a long time, it, and a lot of the similar pedals, are very versatile. And, you can always bypass it if you want to go with your usual sound.

I used this on my pedalboard for years. It is a fairly powerful, reasonably quiet tone shaper. I used it less and less, the more I learned about the skills of creation of tone and I haven't used it in quite a while. But it can do what a parametric does--dial in on a specific spot to boost (or more often, the way I used it, cut) a target freq.

That's been discontinued, Jon. Also, it doesn't have Q control, which I think would be necessary for the honkin' twang effect I'd like to get from it.

Yes, definitely discontinued. What does the Q do? Widen and narrow the width of the affected frequency band?

I've had one of these in my rack for several years. It's a half rack sized unit, not a stomp box, that uses a 12vAC wall wart, so it may not be suitable for your use.

4 band parametric w/ a 20db +/-level for ea. band, freq, and Q controls including shelving type and a master gain control up to 20 db boost. Switchable in and out, an on/off switch. 1/4 port for optional footswitch.

I have 2 of these...one I'm not using if you're interested.

Yessir, see that eq button there? That does it. It's what I do in my rack for guitar, slide etc. I preset the eq for those and just punch it in when I switch from pedal steel to one of the other guitar.

Yes, you can run it in the fx loop it you want. In my rack rig I run it inline, second after the Boss TU50 RM tuner. This one has a selector for line or instrument level connection.

Here is the one I liked after I tried several out.
They are sometimes hard to find tho but it does what I wanted it to do.
It is called the VFE Rocket EQ pedal.
I believe it is discontinued but they are a great pedal IMHO.
You can find one used if you look around.

You may have to try a few different brands to find the one that does exactly what you want changed.
This one did it for me.

I just ordered this tech 21 qstrip last week. It's a great pedal I put it in then effects loop of a fender rumble 500 watt bass amp. It's supposed to be a single strip of a vintage console. The total weight of the rack I made is about 12 lbs I'm really enjoying this setup. It's loud clean and offers a lot of eq flexibility. Here's a picture of it on a gig I played last night.

No Q control on the Q\Strip. Does it take a regular stomp box power 9v supply, or do you have to use the Tech 21 supply?

That looks like a good product with some nice features. Tech 21 been around quite a while. This one must be fairly recently introduced.

Sweetwater shows the Tech 21 DC-4 p/s for this. Specs are 9V DC output @200 mv, center neg plug. Does not state if regulated or not. Do not know if that matters or if other similar adapters will work, though I would suspect they would.

I have two Tech 21 SansAmps that I use in my home recording studio. A Bass DI and a Para Driver DI. They both use 9V batteries or standard 9VDC "stomp box" power supplies.

Neither work well with Pedal Steel (at least for tone I want).

I use any 9v center negative power supply with my Tech 21 Roto-Choir pedal. No problem. Even with my power block. No problem. But mostly a Tech 21 power supply.

This Revival Electric Metric EQ has bandwidth control or "Q" and seems to have good specs for a pedal if you go to their website and something to use in a studio is my guess.

Here's a sample of the pedal. I wish the demo would've done an ongoing sweep of the controls to get an idea of the sonics but the guy was playing and stopping to tweak doing wide dips, cuts and boosts. Might be more of a subtle approach to get this to react better having some power to it.

Hi Bob,
It can be powered with a 9volt battery or phantom powered or any 9v center negative power supply. I use an electro harmonix one that was for another pedal.
I think this thing sounds great lots of clean headroom. It also sounds great with six string guitar there's a lot of sounds you can get out of it. It sounds awesome through my vht 2/90/2 but put it into a class d power amp or one of jay ganz' s power amps and you have a great little steel amp.
I would love to put one of brads black boxes in front of it.
Plus it's made in America
