I was scanning some comments on another group regarding building lap steels. Somebody was asking about different ideas for the fret board design.

Some guy commented something like "the frets on a lap steel are only there for decoration anyhow"...wouldn't you love to hear him play?

I've had a few early electric steels with actual frets instead of flat markers. When showing them off, I always joke that the frets are still in immaculate shape after 80 years.

There was a recent e-bay listing for a Stringmaster which advertised that it had only about 20% fret-wear. Laughing

I have a 25" scale Innovative Guitars lap steel with a padauk fretboard with brass frets.
I think it is absolutely beautiful but that may because I played acoustic guitar for so long before I jumped into lap steel.
The rest have silk-screened or vinyl fretboards so I guess I am semi-normal.
.......and yes, I probably do sound like I am playing with no frets. Mad

I nearly "wore the frets off" my main steel guitar back in the 80s. Really. Due to years of string changing, thousands of smoky bar gigs, wiping the dust off the fretboard hundreds of times, spilling drinks on the fretboard, etc... the frets were nearly worn off my workhorse. One time a friend sat in on my steel at a gig and he was shocked. He said "the frets are worn off!"

I love having frets on my MSA, both my 12 string pedal and my 12 string non pedal. It helps, in an odd way

My dobro has white inlaid wood strips. After 50 years of playing, spilling, smoky bars, same as Doug mentioned, the contrast between the light and dark woods is about gone. One of these days I'll sand it and apply some matte lacquer.
