We all had a great time at the recent "Geezer Gathering" at Grady's BBQ in San Antonio.
There were some notable absences due to the Western Swing Festival going on in Snyder, Texas. But we had a pretty fair assemblage
I guess I finally qualified for membership
Steel players left-to-right:
Gordon Borland, Kenny Grohman, Roger Edgington, Tommy Detamore, Al Michalczak, Denny Mathis, Peter Carey, Jerry Blanton _________________ Tommy Detamore

I see Little Larry made the gathering... definitely geezeresque. Don't recognize anyone else in the group photo.
Blanton looks great, incidentally. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Wow, I don't see Rick Price in the
Geezer Gathering, so I'm reckoning
that he is not yet considered to be
suitable geezer material!
Good goin', Rick!

I can vouch for Rick Price's whereabouts. I visited with him at the Snyder, Tx Western Swing festival. His was playing his usual gig with Jake Hooker. He had several gigs in our area. I think he played with Tommy Hooker also. Snyder had Jake, Bobby Flores and Billy Mata all Saturday so I guess that had a number of the San Antonio musicians occupied. Flores had Nathan Fleming on steel and Mata had a new steeler that I didn't catch his name. I understand Roger has retired from the Mata band. |

I love the steel work that Tommy Detamore did on the 'Return of Wayne Douglas' CD by Doug Sahm....it's good to see what he looks like.......GREAT steel playing Tommy......actually AWESOME!. You and Bobby Flores are an unbeatable combination. Every fiddle and steel lover should own this album. _________________ D10 Emmons LeGrande SKH (rebuilt by Billy Knowles), D10 Emmons Push/Pull (setup by Billy Knowles) , SD10 Rittenberry |

No less a player than Buddy Emmons was knocked out by that album. He called me and asked who the player was on the Doug Sahm album and I told him it was Tommy, from San Antonio.
He said "my my, but you grow them good down there, don't you." _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

J R, I had never heard of Doug Sahm or Tommy Detamore either until I accidentally ran across a youtube video of Doug. I called David Wright and asked him who was playing steel for this guy. He said, "Tommy Detamore." I instantly became a fan of Tommy and this cool cat called Doug Sahm.
Here is a little bit of that album with Tommy:

Tommy detamore must have been a kid when he played with moe bandy and joe stampley back in the moe and joe days. Back in the 70-80's. Played a show in China grove out in a pasture. I was amazed at the sound he had! |
