I bought some for my 67 PP at Stewart McDonald.
Gotoh Vintage-style Oval Nob {Butter Bean}tuners.
Item # 0933
3+3 $28.35 you will need 2 set per neck for a D-10
They look just like the Original Tuners
(Just don't have Kluson written on them)

I've had maybe 20 Emmons in my life ranging from the early to the later years. Most had one or a few tuners that were hopelessly bad (3&6, 4&8, 5&10, etc.) Some, the basket cases, required whole new sets. Yeah, at the risk of overstating it, I know about changing tuners on them.
The way to go is with the Gotoh tuners. They look the same, absent the "Kluson Deluxe" printing on the gear housing (So?), and they have a higher gear ratio with little to no slippage. If you get the new "Kluson vintage style" tuners the screw holes won't line up and you'll have to enlarge the existing holes. Not so with the Gotohs - they fit exactly.
If you want EXACT vintage Kluson replacements then you'll have to hope that what you find aren't worn plus, as I mentioned, you'll have a lower gear ratio with those you do.
Well, then, you might ask, if they're so much better, why not change ALL the tuners on ALL your Emmons with Gotoh's? The answer is I am all for keeping an Emmons as original as it can be.....with the exception of any bad, shot, tuners. I replace the bad ones with Gotohs and put the bad ones in a Zop-Loc bag in the case. That's just a good practice should I ever sell the steel
Do the Gotoh's, try 'em, and then decide whether original Kluson are better. |
