Topic: Gibson S-8 Pedal Steel - Value? |

A non-steel playing acquaintance somehow acquired this at a house sale. I am not familiar with Gibson pedal steels and I'm not able to give him sense of the guitar's value / trade worth.
Has anyone seen / sold / acquired this model?

| A friend of mine's wife picked up one of these at an estate sale. He doesn't play steel, but wanted me to put it back on working order for him. It was an interesting beast to say the least. The one I worked on had 4 pedals.The pedals were designed to change the tuning and are virtually useless to achieve today's pedal steel sound as the mechanism is stiff and noisy. That being said, I was able to get it working as it should. IMHO, the best use for one of these is to set it up as a non-pedal console. He eventually sold it to a collector for $350. |

Depending on when it was made, just the Volume and Tone knobs might be worth a bunch!

Actually, no.
Most Gibson knobs from various years are so plentiful that they don't have much inherent value alone. Common knobs are found on Gibson instruments like Electraharps, lap steels and other models that sell for very little, and "loose" Gibson knobs - except for specific types found only on valuable 6-string models - have little value.

My first pedal steel was that model. S-8 Electraharp.
I bought it in 1964 for 200 bucks. I hated it and found a Fender 400 a year or so later. I sold the Gibson to Rodney Dillard a couple years after that, and Pete Grant played it on the Dillards' Wheatstraw Suite album.
Pete, great player that he is, made it sound good. I don't know if there's any Youtube vids of it, but there might be.
