The effect of a Black Box is subtle rather than something that is gonna ring your chime. I have one of the older ones and one of the newer ones. They both work great, but the newer one is smaller, more compact.

I'm under the impression that, if a customer wants it, he'll upgrade an old one to the new circuit.
Brad can also explain the differences in the iterations

There has been one major change over the years, and that was mainly the move from the taller, larger box to the smaller, flatter box. Then at one point we switched over to 12AX7 from 12Au7, and that is more complex than simply swapping tubes. Both versions work great and pretty much do the same thing and sound the same. Subtle differences.

We ran out of rack shelves but hope to re-stock in the near future. But really, the Black Box belongs on the floor next to the volume pedal. That's the best setup for cabling, keeps it neat and short and simple.

With my Sarno Classic, I put he older Black Box on the floor by the volume pedal. My Sarno Octal is mounted in an old CushCase Rack, which sits near the end of the guitar. The newer Black Box is in the front corner of the rack on the same rack shelf as the Octal, so it is fairly close to the volume pedal also and the Octal. The lead from guitar to Black Box might be a 1 to 1 1/2 foot long, shorter than from the guitar jack to the floor.
