Am I right in thinking that the same procedure is used on guitars without split screws by adding an extra raise rod--that is, the extra raise rod has the same function as a split screw?
So:
1) tune the raise and tune the non-split lower flat of pitch with its hex,
2) press the lower and bring it back up to pitch with the extra raise rod hex,
3) press the lower and the raise together and tune the split note with the lower hex?
Is this correct? |

Right, Brint.
If you both raise and lower a string and the combination is in tune, the lower without a raise will be flat (it's strange physics, but it will always be flat). So if you don't have the screws, you'll need the extra rod going from the bellcrank of the lower to the raise scissor.
Say it's the 6th string; the B pedal brings it to A, the lower and the B pedal add up to G, and if you release the B pedal, the F# will be flat. So a raise rod on the F# lever pulls it back up to the proper F#. This rod doesn't affect the G note because the B pedal is pulling it much farther than the rod on the lever, so if the B pedal is depressed, that rod is doing either bubkes or bugger-all, depending on whether you're Yiddish or Briddish.
If you have the Franklin pedal and an A# lever, you'll need the extra rod to tune the split, since the screw has to be backed off enough to allow the pedal to go to A

I really appreciate the clarity and diction in the video, Mickey.
The explanation makes it less counter-intuitive than it seems, and indirectly does the same for the extra rod method.

Mickey, I have a guitar with those split screws since one and a half year, I never really figured out how to properly tune the splits though.  After watching this, all pedal combinations work together beautifully in tune now. Thanks for unlocking several new options on my guitar! |
