| I'm looking for some pedal steel heavy live albums to listen to. I have Pride's "Live at Panther Hall", Parsons "1973", Boland's "High in the Rockies", Paycheck's "New York Town". What do you all suggest? |

I agree about that Milsap record, John. The whole band is terrific but Dickie is exceptional. I've always loved Ronnie's work no matter how 'cross-over' he gets.
What about that ending lick he plays on 'Country Cooking'?
I saw them at the London Palladium in '74. I'd never heard of him up until then but Milsap was the support act to Glen Campbell and he just had himself on piano, bass, drums, guitar and Dickie O. What a great sound they had and they easily held their own next to Glen with his orchestra, rhythm-section and singing group.

I was going to mention the Dale Watson "Live in London......England!" cd, with Ricky Davis. Outstanding.
Also, Rick Nelson "Live at the Troubadour" with Tom Brumley is killer.
Waylon Jennings "Waylon Live" with Ralph Mooney is essential! Get the expanded reissue, for sure. All killer, no filler.

George Jones Live at Dancetown USA with Buddy Emmons was recorded in '65 or 66, but unreleased til the 90s.

Oh, and let's not forget Commander Cody's live albums "We've Got A Live One Here!" and "Live From Deep In The Heart Of Texas".
Steel is by the great Bobby Black... One of the most under-rated Hall-Of-Famers. On these, Bobby plays many very fast licks and runs similar to Buddy or Doug that have since become common, but most players were not yet playing that way back then. Plus, he executes everything very clean and precise.
They should be 'Required Listening'!

I think there is also a "Live in London" album by Bill Anderson & the Po Boys, with Sonny Garrish on steel.

Three very hard to find Buck Owens albums from 1974 with Jerry Brightman on steel:
Live At The Sydney Opera House
Live In New Zealand
Live In Japan
Ernest Tubb - Live in Seattle - 1965 - Buddy Charleton on steel. Two other future stars were in this band for this recording - Jack Greene and Cal Smith.
Jack Greene & Jeannie Seely - Live At The Grand Ole Opry - 1978 - Ron Elliott on steel.
Willie Nelson & Curtis Potter - Six Hours At Pedernales - 1994 - Buddy Emmons on steel.

Just a quick correction... the 'Redneck Jazz Explosion' albums were produced with "Danny Gatton" as the artist. If you are looking for these, that should help you find them easier. But yes, Buddy & Danny are like Charleton & Rhodes on steroids!
The live Tom Morrell one is great as well. |

True Danny Gatton was an underrated but awesome guitarist. As was Buddy on his Steel Jazz album. "Still am in shock that the Jazzers for Quincy weren't that impressed with his ability" Damn they must be so Coltrane hot its crazy.
