There's so many delays on the market that you may receive countless opinions. They can range from very inexpensive to the opposite end of the spectrum. After trying many pedals including the most popular years ago I settled on the Guyatone MD-3. Small simple and sounds great. I've used it for many years. My setup changed and I needed reverb &a delay so I'm now using the zoom CDR-70 and couldn't be happier. |

I currently own several and my absolute favorite is the Strymon 'Brigadier', rather pricey but outperforms most others that I have used by far. |

The choice of delay unit really depends on what you want it to do and how deep your pockets are. All I want from a delay is a slight slapback, and my $25.35 Joyo JF-33 fills the bill quite nicely, as my feature-laden BOSS DD-5 and DD-7 units rest comfortably in their boxes in a storage unit 1200 miles away. |

I must admit, best Delay I have found is the new Hilton Pedal! I've used it on 4 sessions in the past month. Producer is amazed at the tone I get with my Rittenberry, Hilton Delay and one of my Nashville 112's! _________________ Rittenberry Prestige(2) |

I'm a big fan of the MXR Carbon Copy. You can find them used for under $100.
They are real simple actual analog delay pedals and that sound works for me. _________________ Bob |

The Nemesis unit is a bit more expensive that some others that sit on the floor. But it sounds really good, has lots of different modes and sounds, is customize-able and has excellent control of all parameters.

Yeah, an Echoplex is holy grail if you have one that is in good working condition. The Nemesis has a couple of modes that get a lot of that kind of sound, even if the Echoplex has its own magic that can't be perfectly recreated with our current level of software sophistication. |

"Belle Epoch"from Catalinbread...closest thing I've found to the gray tube Echoplex.
A-Bd it with my EP-2...not a nickel's worth of difference!

I use a Carbon Copy, but haven't tried a Hilton. All of Keith's projects are innovative and well thought out. _________________ 1976 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics 427 pickup, 1975 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics X-12 pickup, Boss 59 Fender pedal for preamp, NDR-5 Atlantic Delay & Reverb, two Quilter 201 amps, 2- 12" Eminence EPS-12C speakers, ShoBud Pedal, 1949 Epiphone D-8. These guys really get into details about Echoplex sounds and various emulator pedals. I've seen other demonstrations of the El Capistan pedal that has excellent characteristics even if overall the Nemesis had an Echoplex emulation that was most useful in my case. I haven't used a Fulltone SS unit but do find the Fulltone TTE with tube preamp as a real tape delay is probably about as close to an Echoplex as can be found in an up-to-date and usable hardware unit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=729c1YkDyWc
Maybe the ultimate thing is to have 3 different Echoplex emulators similar to what Eric Johnson has (so I have heard). But we're talking about 6 string guitar here, not so much pedal steel. |

Of course there's a HUGE variation of what an actual EP sounds like, depending on the tape used, the settings and a large number of mechanical and electronic variables. Each emulator tends to focus on one or more particular characteristics of the real thing. So it's really great that we have so many options available and can choose one that best suits our needs.
Most of the classic recordings have the echo effect so low in volume that you almost can't identify that it's there. Except that a magic and transcendent halo sort of envelops the track. |
