Hey Cool Cats!
Just recently my VK50 combo is making a crackling sound at the very tail end of a note or chord just as it is fading out.
This amp is one year old, gently used and has been very quite since new.
I removed the pedals that were running thru the effects loop, turned off the on board reverb, changed settings from class A to class AB and back again, switched channels from clean to distortion and back again and the crackle sound still surfaces at the note's end.
I cycled thru 4,8 and 16 ohm settings as well as 2,25 and 50 watt power settings. I also changed out instrument cables.
Any ideas from you Peavey savvy guys and girls?

| Frank..Do you use the amp strictly for practice, in other words, does the amp remain set at a constant volume level for long periods? If so, may be a dirty volume pot. My 'Nashville 112' is my home practice amp and I have experienced this problem occasionally. My solution is; with the amp turned on, strike the strings and rotate the volume knob to full on and back a time or two, you may notice the problem clearing up. |

In addition to what David Nugent said, do the other pots as well.
I have an ancient Carvin XV112E.
It sits in the same spot, and I use it for recording and practice.
I have settings that work and never touch the knobs.
I while back I had the same thing happening with six string on the tail end of notes. It was intermittent, but happening more consistently as time went on.
It was more noticeable on distorted settings, due to the extra gain.
I thought it was tubes, or their seating. Tried that. Nope.
I thought for a while that I was going to have to tear into it.
Around that time, somewhere on the interwebs, I stumbled across a post for the same problem.
Someone said if you have that problem, and never turn the knobs, to rotate them a few times to work away any dust/residue that may have collected.
End of story.
If that doesn't work, with the power off (obviously), pull out and reinstall the tubes. No guarantees here, but maybe....... |

I've done all those things today except pull the tubes and reinstall. What I did notice today is it's making crackling sounds with nothing plugged into it at all. So I'm now at a loss. Any other ideas I'm open to suggestion.

The bits that hold the pins and make contact get loose over time, and need to be rebent.
You can do it yourself, look on YouTube for some guidance.

I am truly dumb...
It was a new regular 6 string guitar making all the noise.
Says a lot about quality control these days, and my unquestioning loyalty to a brand.
