Hello all,

Lately I've been getting into the Everly Brothers' album 'Sing Great Country Hits' (released 1963), which has some great steel on it by Red Rhodes:

I've never really appreciated Red Rhodes that much. I heard a few Mike Nesmith/First National Band tracks years ago and wasn't overwhelmed, but I quite like his playing on these classic country songs. And his tuning is very interesting too. Here it is transposed from Eb6 to E9:

It seems pretty original - lots of Ds and some unusual raise combinations (D & C, F# & Eb, F# & D x2).

Anyone using changes that are similar to this?

Greg

What an interesting man (a real character and a genius)! I grew up in So California and knew of him as a player, store owner, band leader, studio musician, inventor etc. This in not here to tell stories, per se, but he was a genius in his "electronic pursuits" and his playing. I remember asking him several times throughout the years about taking lessons from him. His response was usually along the lines of, "I really would not be a very good teacher" or "I am not even sure how I do some of these things, it just comes out!" In his way, he was humble, I just wished I could have studied with him to learn some of those secrets. If you look in Winnie Winston's book, you will see a comment about Red's Eb diatonic tuning should be looked at carefully. It strikes me- has anyone ever asked Jay Dee, Pete Grant or John Bidasio about this.

It doesn't sound like E9 or C6.

Red sure demonstrated some very creative & tasty innovations in that recording.
I'm reminded also that my deceased friend, Al Gershon, got & played Red's Fender 1000.

I think strings 2-10 are similar to part of Zane Beck's and Zane King's 12 string tunings.

Been enjoying these Red albums lately, most likely done on the Fender 1000 Don mentioned:

Red plays great all over Iain Matthews' "Valley Hi" album......steel and dobro. Just perfect.

Check this one out.......and note where The Eagles stole the arrangement!

Thanks Dave. I faintly remembered the Clarence White Tele thing, but I wasn't sure.
