It's such a drag getting stuff shipped from the US to Canada. Shipping rates can be exorbitant and brokerage by some well-known carriers is usurious.
Luckily, i live close to the border and can drive down to a PO Box and do my own brokerage.

yes Allan, and it seems like it's getting worse each day, just too much to deal with, I shipped all over the world, Europe, Japan, Asia, Australia etc...but sadly, those days are over...

I hear ya Damir, I stopped shipping international several years ago. Just way too much insanity when something goes wrong. Friends from Canada who are close to the border are smart to have a USA address and deal with the customs fees themselves, first hand.

Yes, if buyer from Europe has a friend here I can ship to him, and he can then ship to Europe or wherever, but I'm done with international shipping bs...

All 6 of my pedal steel guitars were shipped to South Africa without any problems. That was before 2004. All done by private owners.
Things have changed.
However, I recently shipped my Fender Artist (made by Sho-Bud) to Bishop Ronnie P Hall without any problems. I boxed the cased guitar inside a box I made from 2" polystyrene. I then wrapped that combination in cardboard. The Yanks could not destroy that guitar.

packing and actual shipping is just one part of the whole process, there is insurance limits, weight limits, taxes and duties and some other stuff, I don't feel like getting into this too deep, I just don't want to deal with that any more, if anyone else wants to, go right ahead...

Hi Damir, is this an issue with the couriers, or with 'difficult' international customers? I hope it's not the latter! I hate it when people ruin it for everyone else!

the size and weight of a pedal steel or amp is a big issue for international shippers, and it seems that carriers feel the issues give them license to gouge the customer.

that said, i buy a lot of smaller items from forum members and small companies, and they ship to canada with no problems.

i hope that other forum members don't feel the need to stop shipping outside the us.

for me it isn't really about the Steel Guitar , it's ANYTHING outside the USA these days.

My last International dealing was a small Laptop sent outside the USA from an EBAY sale. The Post Office lost it for well over 6 months and refused to honor the ins because they said it was not them but rather a foreign agent who lost it, or misplaced it. I had to refund around $400 to the buyer and wait it out . Finally one day the Postman shows up at the house, probably 6 months later with my original package, unopened, unmolested. He says I owe $75 for return postage. I took the box out of his hands, told him no way, I'm not paying. I told him the brief story and told him to have the local PO General call me, of which he never did.

I was told by another agent that the package probably sat in some customs office overseas for the entire time and then one day someone picked it up and sent it back. Thank God they didn't deliver it, I had already refunded the buyers money !

if you ship USPS,every country has a limit you can insure your package on, I've seen it from $1600 to $2500 ...if buyers sends me $5500 for a ZUM, and doesn't want to pay $800 to ship FedEx or UPS which have no limits, but USPS, and I can insure guitar on only $2000 what happens if guitar gets lost or stolen? buyer will get his $2000 eventually, but what happens with the rest of $3000 ??? I can tell you what will not happen, he won't see me sending him $3000 out of my pocket...and then we have a problem...

Greg, in the couple recent cases guitar I received from Europe as a gift, I got nailed with over $200 by UPS for brokerage fees, I got the bill in the mail two weeks after I received the guitar...in the other case I was shipping guitar to Europe, and European shipper which was hired by the buyer sent me a paperwork where I was responsible for all the taxes and duties, I emailed them multiple times to change that on the paperwork which they refused to do, so I cancell the sale completely, it costed me time and effort, and $100 to wire the refund back to buyer...no more...I'm done , I've been shipping guitars all over the world for the last few years, but I just decided not to do that any longer because of all the risk and bs involved...
