In an earlier thread Michael Lee Allen stated

Quote:
[quote="Michael Lee Allen"]Mr Nelson...
Have you checked out the jazz steel LPs that were released by the Case Brothers on Priority which feature Tom Morrell or Maurice Anderson, or the two together on "Sextet Sessions" which is still available on this forum? MLA

I have Sextet Sessions and all five or six volumes of "Moods" as well as Mike Perlowin's compilations. I have always heard there was another LP. Is that the Priority LP referred to above? Can I buy it? Can someone burn a copy if its not available?

Besides Sextet Sessions, Reece made his "Universal Direction: Gospel LP, and the European only release "Universal Steel Man." All but one of the tunes on Universal Steel Man are included in volume 2 of the CDs I compiled.

Reece also made 2 CDs "Steel and Brass" and "Up the creek without a pedal." This last one features Reece playing his 12 string Hawaiian steel.

Bill:

See what you lack and are interested in from these links. Steel on some.

I think Johnny is a forum member.

I talked to him on the phone maybe 30 years ago when I was trying to locate various Case Brothers/Maurice Anderson/Tom Morrell LPs.

As I recall, he did not have any remaining stock at that time.

They weren't easy to find even when released unless you were connected. Doubt if you could have found them at Tower Records or a similar big time retailer.

Off the top of my head, here is Reece's discography:

*Modern Steel Guitar (possibly the same as Moods Vol. 1)
*The Moods Of Maurice Anderson (Vols. 1-5)
*Sextet Sessions (w/Tom Morrell)
*Contrasts In Jazz (John Case/Jerry Case)
*Universal Steel Man (Europe)
*Live at the ISGC (two songs by Reece, both are on the Upon Request Vol. 2 compilation)
*The Universal Direction
*Steel With Brass
*Steel Playin' Texas Swing (includes Reece's tune "Up The Creek Without A Pedal", so I think this is what Mike P. meant to say)
*Out Of Nowhere (w/Jim Stahlhut)
*Upon Request (Vols. 1-2) (update: album title corrected)

I would also recommend Johnny Gimble's "The Texas Fiddle Collection", which contains a ton of great solos by Reece.

Thanks gents. I guess I should have been a little more thorough in my listing. I have them all except "Contrasts".

Would someone burn a copy for me? I would buy it, if it were still available. PM or email me for address, etc.

A friend of mine from high school in NJ became a big deal in the jazz world as a businessman, but out of college (North Texas State) he stayed in Texas and opened a recording studio and knew Maurice well, after having him make a few records at his place. I'll have to ask him about the records they made. Today, his artists win Grammys left and right, including Esperanza Spalding.

I too wish that I had "Contrasts In Jazz", along with the following:

*Modern Steel Guitar
*Moods 1,2,4,&5 (I have Vol. 3)
*Universal Steel Man
*By Request Vol. 1 (I have Vol. 2)

Let us know if anybody can help. Reece was my hero and mentor. I've been collecting his works for along time.

I just found something interesting... Sorry if it's old news to some. This looks quite accurate and complete:

MP...
You mean JERRY? He's the guitarist brother. John is the pianist. Last I heard John is still in Texas. Jerry has been in the LA area for years. I was lucky enough to see him a few times in small combo lineups. He seems like a really low-profile guy but it's worth it to search him out. He's REALLY, REALLY good.

I mean John, the guitarist. I met him a couple of times as we played at the same place (different nights.)

Jerry Case is the guitar playing brother. He's in California.
John Case is the piano playing brother. He's in Texas.
Both brothers have played bass on some of the Priority label recordings.

Michael, the man I met was named John. He played a 7 string guitar.

It's possible that it's a different person with the same name.

Uh oh... Does this mean we may not have a connection to the 'Contrasts' record after all?

Above is Johnny Case's contact info; he's a member.

Only 12 posts in 6 plus years, so he may not log in often.

His most recent post was last September regarding the passing of Bud Isaacs. Most of his posts have been in the "Gone Home" section.

You could send him a private message and see if he responds, but my guess is it won't help as I'm pretty sure he told me 30 years ago he had no more of Contrasts or any of them.

You could pound on Ebay and the Internet generally and may eventually turn up a copy.

I ordered 'Contrasts in Jazz' last week... and I wish I had waited, because this one is less:

Somebody should jump on it!

Oh yeah... does anybody know anything about John & Jerry Case's 'Jazz Potpourri' (a later Priority album featuring Reece)?
