my vote on who the steel player is on Whoa Sailor, would be a young Bert Rivera. He also played on a little know but "knock your shirt off" recording of Billy Thompson who records with the Brazos Valley Boys, some time ago. You can hear a young Curtis Potter if you listen closely. I do not have a name for the recording, but it has some good stuff on it!

I grew up listening to Hank and the Brazos Valley boys. They were one of my favorite bands, Next to Ernest Tubb and his band.

Big Hank Thompson fan here. His material is so consistently good throughout his long career. What a great source of Steel licks, especially great pedal C6 stuff.

My favorite. Above all.

It’s why I became a Chalker fan.

And, Bobby Garrett , Merle Travis work with the bvb about the best in my mind.

Everything hank did was awesome

My youngest is 14. She absolutely loves hank Thompson

We listen a lot.

I got to meet and hang out with hank three different times over the years what great guy.

My dream was to play steel with him just once. I missed the opportunity.

Also met red hays and billy Stewart on one occasion with hank. Was at will Rogers colesium in ft worth when I was a kid. Mid 60s. Had backstage access. Also met Archie Campbell, ferlin husky, Jan Howard on that show. It was cool.

The effect his steel player did that I really liked was to do harmonics at three different places on the fretboard by using his little finger and raking the strings with his thumb.
I got so I could do that pretty good! Very Happy

I liked Hank's melancholy side as well. Remember "She's just an old flame"? Many others too...

You don't see old pictures of Marlens everyday, very cool. I have one just like it, as well as a Standel 50 L15 that came from a Hank Thompson estate sale.

Back in his day, Hank Thompson and the Brazos Valley Boys won band of the year for several consecutive years. Very Happy
