Anybody know the serial numbers for Emmons Legrandes ?

I am wondering about a LeGrande III D10 #1747L
I think it is a 95.

I haven't found a comprehensive listing of LeGrande serial numbers anyplace yet.

It's a black D-10 8x5. And it really is a great playing and sounding guitar, even with me beatin' the tar out of it for the last 12yrs.

Thanks for the info Bobby. My D10 LsGrande is Black and with only a 3 digit Serial Number I assumed it had to be made first or second year of LeGrande production.

Wonder where all the other original LeGrandes may be, or if they were used to scavenger parts - even though bell cranks have 4 holes versus later iterations 14 hole bellcranks.

The Forum is a great resource of knowledge.

I've had two new LeGrandes. The first was delivered in Summer of 1998 and it's number was 1886L.

That was an SD-10 (Sapphire Blue) but then I ordered a black D-10 - I still have that one (and always will!) and 2085L was delivered to me in October 2000.

I hope this will help in adding to the list.

Thanks Roger. It will help in guesstimates for sure. Many owners have bought second hand guitars and take the sellers word for the year model. I've found that sadly many sellers run the year model up a bit. This also shoots a hole in the 200 units a year remark. Maybe in the late 90's but for sure not in the early 90's.

As I've stated in the past. The only way to know for sure is to call Emmons Guitar. A few years ago that was no problem. Bobbie was happy to look up serial #'s. Even very old ones. But seems that has come to pass. I have a very old one. Have tried to get it verified but haven't received a reply. I'm sure Ron's likely too busy to look up all the serial # request he must get. So I'm not trashing anyone.

Bob, that Emmons was sold NEW in 1995.
Being that it is Black, I suspect it did not sit around very long.

I'm very interested in a time line for Emmons steels. It is amazing how a company that seems to have gone through all sorts of management changes consistently made such good sounding guitars.

With all the different models from the wraparound to the LeGrande III there really is an Emmons sound.

Just for the record...

My SD-10 (#1886-L) had the end-plate cutout for C6th. I ordered it from the UK on May 15th, 1998.

I had hoped I'd ordered in plenty of time - my first US gig ever started at Mill Mountain Theater in Roanoke in late-July and I wanted to avoid flying to America with a steel guitar. In the end it didn't work out - Jim Aycoth was still experiencing some difficulty with quality control on some castings which delayed delivery on a number of guitars - and I had to bring my D-10 Pro 3 with me.

(I also see from my diary that the Sho-Bud weighed in at 29kgs at the Heathrow check-in. Back in those halcyon days one could fly with 140 pounds of baggage on transatlantic flights!)

I see from my records that the Emmons finally shipped on August 17, 1998 and I received it in Roanoke on the 19th. I can still recall Jim's frustration with the delay yet, looking back, a waiting time of just three months for a new Emmons seems like an impossible dream, doesn't it?

It was a lovely steel and I wish I'd kept it. But, when I got my new D-10 just two years later, I sold the SD-10. Very silly!

Does anyone know where my Sapphire Blue SD-10 - 1886-L - is today? I'd buy it back if I could.

Looking more closely at the numbers and assembly dates of my two new LeGrandes there's about two hundred steels in between them. That's a period of 26 months and it indicates slightly less than 8 new steel shipped each month.

Ninety-something a year? No-one would have got rich from it but a tidy enough small business producing a quality product. I wish the Aycoths could have stayed in control.

I have a Emmons, Legrand number 703L Jack Strayhorn built it for Bruce BOUTON. I don't know the year. It was built, I traded with Bruce, I'm thinking it was 1990 OR 1992. It has a square steel bar IN the center. The length of the guitar, I have never seen another Emmons, double 10 with this particular bar. I would think it is a BRACE for the C6 neck. Anyone know anything about this extra hollow bar IN the center of my Emmons, Legrand? Maybe Jack Strayhorn can enlighten me. Willie SIMS.

Adding to the info: I have a Legrand serial number 515L that I ordered new through Charlie McVay in February 1987. 11 months later, I received it in January 1988. D-10, 8+7, several tuning compensators, half stop on the second string RKR, Derby Black, 1" higher than stock.

Chris, yours being only 7 numbers away from mine, has to have been shipped in '95. That is if numerical order means anything. I got the information on my guitar directly from Emmons a few yrs. back.
