I have one that sounds pretty good. Took a little time for me to adjust to what I wanted.

is $600.00 new (old stock) a good price. How does it stack up to the Fender Twin Reverb..?

I had one for 7 years and I liked it a lot. It had a lot of Lows. I put an Eminence neo magnet speaker in it, and that cut the weight by 15 lbs. I sold it a couple of years ago when I got a Quilter, but now I'm wishing I had it back, just to have a different kind of sound once in a while.

I had one,it was ok and I liked it when I turned around and saw Fender on the grille cloth. I never could get the exact sound I wanted as I thought the mids had a thumpy kind of funkiness to it.

I've had a Quilter now for over two years and like it.

I loved mine with the stock speaker! Had 2 of them in fact. Replaced the stock speaker with a Peavey Black Widow and the sound was muddy. I paid $550 for new old stock when they first came out and just sold one for $375 shipped.

I found the stock speaker to be very brittle in the steel king on the high end

I put black widow in mine and it sounded good

its good amp just to heavy for me

I guess just a ear thing...

your mileage may vary as they say

I had a Steel King and sold it as I could not carry it. I bought a Jazz King from a Forum member that is the same as a Steel King only 140 watts. Nice amp and I still can't carry it😬

From what I recall, they were very troublesome. A local player purchased one new and it spent more time in the shop than on stage, He had it repaired one last time and sold it.

Charley wrote "the new Fender Steel King" in the thread title.

Even though it wasn't that many years ago that Fender came out with this amp, hasn't it already been several years since it was discontinued?

Though there might still be "new old stock" in certain stores, it's been quite awhile since they made these. I thought they were pretty nice (though they weigh a ton), but I guess this amp didn't "take" with steel players like Fender was hoping it would.

I too heard that some players had problems with their FSK. I never had any problems with mine. I played it for seven years and hauled it all over New England. No problems.

Me too. The highs were shrill IMO. I play a push/pull, which has a lot of highs anyway. After I swapped out the speaker for an Eminence neo mag. the shrillness was gone.

I bought mine not long after they came out. A few years ago I replaced the stock speaker with a lightweight neo speaker. It's never given me one ounce of trouble.

It sounds great with all the tone knobs straight up.

I'm with Greg on the Fender Steel King, i just loved it. I had resident speaker cabinet guru Rick Johnson convert it into a "Split Cab" configuration for me. Easy for me to haul it, and it sounded great. Just my assessment of the Steel King is all. I really should have kept it i s'pose.

I tried one out, and thought it sounded great.

Then I tried to lift it. Need I say any more?

I had one for a while and liked it. It was a little fussy to dial in but I did get a sound I liked out of it. Put a Telonics Neo in it and that made it pretty manageable.
Had a chance to pick up a Webb locally and couldn't pass it up so the SK had to go, but I did have a chance to play them side by side briefly and I was surprised at how good the SK held up to the Webb.
The only downside I noticed was the build quality was typical new Fender - the jacks were pretty flimsy and one was noisey on occasion and the pots felt kinda cheap.

Best sounding amp to me. And I agree with what Leo said, knobs straight up gives the best tone. I spend more time picking and a bunch less time twisting knobs on the amp. Very Happy

The tone controls are very powerful and its easy to dial in a good tone. The Telonics tone control selection is very similar too. I also tried mine side by side with the Webb 6-14-E and decided they were so similar that I sold the Webb!

I bought a Steel King a few years back and I love it. It's loaded with a Black Widow and has a ton of tone with it. I also have a rack that I use a Peavey Tubefex powered through a 500 Mossvalve amp. I can't tell much difference in the tone. The rack is stereo where the Steel King is mono. I think that's about the only difference.

Had lots of trouble with mine. Mainly the reverb wiring. I took it apart and hard wired the tiny leads to the transducers and never had another problem** Well there was the hernias Laughing

Similar to some of the experiences here:
-- unusually deep cabinet makes it a bear to carry.
-- speaker runs shrill but after trying several replacements I went back to the original because I found it tuned the best for this amp.
-- first time I heard a friend gigging one, a dozen years ago, I knew I wanted one and ordered mine. It has a big sweet spot. Yes, you can start with everything at 12 o'clock, then fine tune as needed. Ironically, that friend grew to hate his. I forget if it's because he had quality problems or just didn't like it.
-- I find the reverb almost useless. Way too deep and wet. Too all or nothing. I skip it & use a box.
