Indeed. It took me over two decades to get a tone I like out of my hands.

I thought the OP was about SPEED not tone!!! did I read it wrong? The tone thing is subjective anyway. THE TONE for me would not be THE TONE for you. JMO

Speed, efficiency and tone are all linked. And saying "just pick them strings" does none of these a service.
With practice and drilling one can get any techniques faster then you can think of picking the notes.
