Check this album out in it's entirety, especially Boots Randolph's opening solo on the first cut, "Relaxin' ". Also includes a 17-yr old Gary Burton on vibes, Chet Atkins and Hank Garland on guitars, Floyd Cramer on keys (very hip jazzer!), Buddy Harmon, Bob Moore, and Brenton Banks.

Awesome, straight-ahead jazz album from 1960.

An under the radar classic. I used to have it on CD. Not on the level of Jazz Winds From a New Direction but still pretty good.

Wow. Nice. I wasn't aware of this one and will listen to the whole thing. Agree on Boots on Relaxin, I had no idea.

Ever hear the Tennessee Firebird album? The CD version has a great bonus cut of Panhandle Rag by Emmons and Spicher. I read somewhere that Burton (paraphrasing here) told the Nashville guys to just play what they knew and was sort of disappointed that they were such good jazzers. He must have had in mind to get something "more different" out of the project. The weakest part is Roy Haynes' drums on the bluegrass tunes.

Thanks for sharing Jim!

Dig Boot's ascending chromatic line @ 2:11.

Wow!
