Looking at getting an 8 string acoustic, playing a 6 with G6 (GBDEGB) and figure that 8 strings give me all my dobro moves and all my 6th tuning moves in one instrument.

Looking through the classifieds here, and there look to be a couple gold tone beard 8s, a dobro OMI and a Deneve.

It's a niche corner of a niche corner instrument (8 string acoustics) so getting in front of one locally is pretty much not going to happen (unless there is one in Phoenix AZ Next week).

Wondering the pro's and cons of these three (since they are the ones I see FS now). My budget is probably under $900. I dont need a pickup and pretty much play in the living room, and an occasional jam.

Much obliged for any advice and direction.

I suggest having the D on top on the 8 string version - I keep my 6 string tuning for G6 at B D E G B D, and really like it that way. Yours is more like the C6 with the 3rd on top not the 5th of the chord.

Enjoy your new instrument.

I'd certainly be happy with the Deneve, a quality box.

The G-T PBS-8 is surprisingly good sounding guitar for the $$$. I've played a bunch of them, all in G6. Extra points if set up by the Beard shop (of course). They also build the arguably "Rolls Royce" MA-8.

Not a fan of the OMI.

YMMV.

That DeNeve looks like a smoking deal to me. Kind of wish I needed one.

So, how are the old OMI 8 strings? I've only played the Gold Tone, which I thought was so-so. It's got laminate back and sides and IMO does not compare to the all-wood Gold Tones. Is the OMI solid woods?

Ask Nate Hoefer he just got one so I'm assuming he did some research.

OMI was around from the early 70's early 90's. Not sure if they made 8 strings during the entire period. As far as I am aware they were all laminates.

IMHO the Gold Tones are better instruments.

FWIW the Beard MA-8 is considered by many to be the gold standard and commands a price that reflects that.

I'll toss in my vote for the Gold Tone with the Beard shop set-up. IMHO best bet for the money. And it just loves G6.

I also vote the Gold Tone. I bought one about a month ago and I love it. I have a 10 string acoustic melobar that was my mine instrument for the last bit and I haven't really even touched it since I got the Gold Tone. It came in G6 but I changed it to C6 just because I think it works better in the trio I play in (Upright bass, acoustic, and slide). I mostly play lead so I didn't really need the so much low end. The tone is great and if you get on it it can be really loud which I really like. A lead on it cuts threw the rest of the band like butter.

In other news, anyone interested in a 10 string melobar acoustic?

Adams Resonator Guitars (adamsresonator.com) has recently moved to Spring, Texas (next to Houston)and makes excellent resonator guitars. I have been to his shop recently and have played on a couple of custom ordered 8-string guitars. One is 22 1/2" scale, other one is 24" scale. Both sounded great. He could make you one to your specs. He makes them in laminates, exotic woods, and also carbon fiber bodies. Great work at a reasonable price.

I own one of his 6 string resos which has become my favorite.

At least check out his website.

Thanx,
Jim

Thanks for all the advice on and off of this thread.

I ended up getting an Adams, it came last night and I'm thrilled with it. (and hey, it had my name on it)
