Last night at the dance we did Sammy Kershaw's version of an old George Jones song. I like the intro and turn around better than George's original version. Me and the fiddle player twined the intro like Kershaw's version. When the fiddle player and I kicked this off my Evans amp and Emmons steel was screaming! Here is the link to You Tube

That's a great steel friendly tune. I love it.
I first heard it by the Flying Burrito Brothers way beach then. I was into country rock at the time. |

That is actually Paul Franklin on steel. It was from a George Jones tribute show. Following Sammy Kershaw was Uncle Kracker. He did my favorite George Jones song.

Chuck Jennings use to do that song when we were with Tony Douglas and the Shrimpers and I also got to take Ralph Mooneys place one night on steel with Jody Payne (Willie's guitar player) and Bobby Wayne (Merle's guitar player) at a club in Texas on that song. It's one of my favorite Country shuffles.
We were having the blackeyed pea festival in Athens, Tx. and Willie and Waylon always worked it together every year. Nice to have it all going only 35 miles from my house. |

Video director short changed the steel.. must have a grudge...
Amber Digby did this tune several years ago. Dickey Overbey sure tore it up on that version.

This old show is recycling on AXS TV's on-demand. (Fast-forward through it for steel parts.)
It's a great study in classic-country accompaniment. Franklin keeps it simple but, when it's his turn, comes at you like a brass section: mostly double stops, maybe a triad or two, not a lot of contrary motion, unison, etc.
Wish he'd tell us his thinking. Franklin referenced charts sometimes whereas Brent Mason didn't have a music stand . . . wonder if the charts were provided by the band leader, artist, or if Franklin made his own ahead of time . . . ?
We can probably all execute those licks—but with good tone, intonation, timing? Would we have kept it clean, simple, appropriate? |
