Anybody been brave enough to try one of these diy kits? Know anything about them? Reviews are mixed.

Just looking for experience with this co. and this product. Thought maybe some of you "handy-dandies" have been there?

I did one in a subwoofer in a Mercury Mountaineer I owned.

It worked, although not as good.

I may, in fact, be nuts. However, I am screwed onto the right bolt... Jesus!

I thought about reconing a speaker for my super reverb myself, but decided not to. After reading up I decided experience was the better part of valor. Everything has to line up just so or it won't work right. I'm pretty good with mechanical repairs, but it was only $35.00 more to have a pro do it, $70.00 total.

I became a factory Trained JBL Reconer in 1994

These Kits are just as easy as the JBL kits.

That Blue thing is a "Shim" that goes into the voice coil gap, to center the coil. The coil goes out side of the shim.

You put Bostic glue bead on the bottom of the Spider ( Wavey ) Thing around the coil.
You place a bead of the Bostic on the frame edge and the bottom of the Compliance, ( Outer edge rippley thing. )

Line up the Leads to your solder tabs, and drop it down.

With your Nirile Gloved hand finger tip the bottom and top glues.

A few drops of MEK ( Home Center) will re activate the glues if needed.

Bead of Bostoc around the Compliance on top for the Cork Gaskets , make sure to line up the Screw holes.

Turn upside down and place on flat surface to add pressure while drying. 24 hours

leave the Shim in there while it dries.

next day pull the shim out , and carefully test the travel of the cone to make sure it is not Rubbing on any side of the gap.

Press down lightly just out side of the coil .

Carefully run a small bead of the black bostic around the top of the coil, using blue tape as a little handle drop the aluminum cap in place.

You want to dry fit it a few times. if needed extra very carful , go around the cap and bend the little edge outward.

After you drop the cap on, test the travel again, then another bead of the black to seal the cap.
Less Is More. If it goes into the gap , you are in deep doo doo, but can melt all of that bostic with mek, and pull it all out and start again.

Let the cap dry , -- last thing solder the leads to the tabs.
Test with a 9 volt battery.
Touch it to the connections , + side will make the cone jump forward , - will make it jump inward.
Typically JBL's are Black = hot.

Free JBL School in a paragraph.

Before you start this you must thoroughly clean the Voice Coil Gap, the top frame edge the top where the spider goes.

After all of this feel under the edge of the frame to look with your finger for little glue drip outs, that can cause a "Tick"

Hook up to a Signal generator , and run at 30 cycles low volume for an hour to listen for rubbing - ticks and so on.

That's all there is to it . Or Send it to a reputable recone like Orange County Recones. JBL has reconers all around the country so look one of them up.

Last and most important -
All of these glues and MEK are full on Carcinogenic --
Vapors can cause Fatal Complications,
Wear a Lacquer quality Respirator and have extensive ventilation.
MEK contact with Skin can cause the same long term undesirable conditions.

Thanks for that, George, I have a friend that worked for a while reconing speakers for a music store, he too says it's no big deal!
BTW, no longer is Orange County reconing speakers, but the good news is, their recone guys are still doing it.

I did a 12" eminence omega pro with a kit and watching a couple youtube vids. It's pretty easy and kinda fun if you ask me. Speaker still works fine.
