I discovered our Forum friend, Martin Gross on youtube last year. His version of Teach Your Children really caught my ear. His playing is extremely clean and accurate and the string pulls make his resonator guitar into the manual version of a Pedabro
Here it is on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC-N4zl1QZo
I'll also post my attempt at tabbing this to the Steel Without Pedals Tablature section but since you're already here I'll save you "clicking around on the Forum".
Note it is in standard dobro tuning, except for the 2nd string which is dropped a full tone to "A". High to low, D-A-G-D-B-G. Martin recommends an .020 2nd string to make the pulls easier. I had to "free-form" the symbols a bit to accomodate the string pulls. Note the difference between the "bend" and striking a "pre-bent" string. (the bend is noted as an arc whereas the pre-bend starts with a vertical line)
Have fun with it and comments and corrections are always welcome. And check out the rest of Martin's great videos on youtube!

I am gonna say that in terms of technique, that thing was amazingly and totally influenced by pedal steel. Its dobro playing that wouldn't exist without a double neck 10 somehow. it was so MECHANICAL and SPARSE, there is no way a pure dobro player could have imitated those sounds, only someone who regularly played a pedal steel could take this type of approach, that's the appearance it gives. This goes way beyond dobro playing for me. _________________ Derby SD-10 5x6; GFI S-10 5x5; GFI S-10 5x5; Zum D-10 8x7; Zum D-10 9x9; Fender 400; Fender Rumble 200; Nashville 400; Telonics TCA-500. |
