I would hold off a while until you save a couple hundred more, then consider a Melbert steel by Robert Allen, for example. I think a Rondo, Morrell, etc. would disappoint you and discourage your progress. There are lots of other options, as well. _________________ Clinesmith consoles D-8/6 5 pedal, D-8 3 pedal & A25 Frypan, Pettingill Teardrop, & P8 Deluxe. |

Please search the Steel Without Pedals section for many discussions of the Morrell, Rondo, Recording King, etc. budget lap steels. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Thank you for the input. I'll consider it. |
You would be supporting a builder in the US by going this route (Melbert) - and that is certainly valid. But I'm not so sure I'd agree that the quality of the super-economy (often made in China/Korea) steels will discourage your progress. The mechanics of playing will be the same, no matter what lap steel you use.
I used a 6-string Morrel for a few years - I could afford it and it got me playing when I wanted to play. Waiting on a more expensive guitar would have discouraged my progress....as there would have been no progress if there was no guitar to play. YMMV.
Heck, I started with one of these. Which is why I think, "whatever gets ya pickin'..."

I'm back on the prowl....and I have a little more saved up. Looking for 6 or 8 stringers. Found a great deal on CL but the seller didn't want to ship to Maine...oh well. |
