What kind of stand do lap players use when they aren't playing, such as during intermission? I've tried a bunch of different guitar and banjo stands but they either don't fit or they tip over easily. |

I use this stand. It fits most single-neck steels well, and it's adjustable to different thickness bodies. |

Bob... I'd like to hear more about this too. I've tried a bunch of guitar stands - some modified - but the narrow body and weight of a lap steel makes them pretty jittery...
The mandolin stand shown in the previous post looks good, but costs $25...I was hoping to find a design that worked specifically for a lap steel that could be made in my wood shop.
I can tell you that this style does not work.

I use a ukulele stand. It fits the small body of most lap steels. The neck is too tell for it but it works well in my music room and doesn't seem prone to tipping. |

Hello...
I got the Herculese stand Noah talks about. The steel I use it for is a newer Gretsch...
The one in the middle, it weighs a ton! When I chopped off the lower curve some time ago
I found out why. The wood is different layers of a crazy stout plywood. Anyway the stand held it perfectly, no problem. Well worth the $25.00 for no accidents.
Good luck.

What about modeling a stand after This Stand?
Seems like dual-posts at the top would hold a lapsteel pretty secure... |

I have one of those (7 slot stand).
By the time you "modded" one of those you would be ahead starting from scratch. |

I know you're not talking about this type of lap steel stand, but nothing out there holds your steel more securely and conveniently as the Deluxe34

I love my Deluxe34s (all 3 of 'em):

|
|
Thanks everyone...the problem I'm trying to solve is with a stand that can be used to 'rest' a lap steel on stage. I switch between the steel and fiddle frequently so a stand has to make both readily available.
Sturdy and stable, yet portable and stowable. I have one of the mandolin stands mentioned in this thread. I find the leg spread just wide enough that the steel has to be EXACTLY in the middle or it's precarious.
For the leg stand recommendations, thank you. I normally play a Stringmaster D8 when the venue allows. The lap steel I use (one of Bob Allen's) is put to work when I'm playing backup for a single singer or informal gathering. |

I agree, I was not meaning to mod one, but to model a stand like it, where you could just sit the steel down, with 2 posts or "arms" sticking out & low enough to support both sides of the steel.
With the opening in the bottom even pointy, squared off steels would be able to be angled to keep them safe. |

Nice idea...I like it.
I currently just lean it up against the back/side of my amp...definitely not an ideal practice |

Not sure what shape your lap steel is, but this is stable and works for me... the neck support height is adjustable.. and they cost like $19 at Guitar Center. Folds up
