I don't think that you can go wrong with The Great Dobro Sessions:

The link is for reference only. CD available wherever quality music is offered. There is lots of good dobro music out there; that one came to mind first. Enjoy! Cool

Jerry Douglas "Traveler"

Mike Auldridge "Eight String Swing"

Just Google:

Mike Auldridge
Jerry Douglas
Rob Ickes

Pick one...Can't go wrong. Dozens of excellent projects between those three.

Bonus time: "Three Bells" has a tribute to the 'Big E' called - what else? - "For Buddy."

pretty sure every CD mentioned is "just pickin", no vocals if that's what you mean.

The Great Dobro Sessions would be my first pick, it's got tons of players, a wide range of material, and over 20 tunes.

some of Mike Auldridge's other albums do have vocals, but 8-String Swing does not. the style is not really bluegrass though, as the title would suggest. but a wonderful album nonetheless.

likewise, some of Jerry Douglas and Rob Ickes' albums venture away from bluegrass so it just depends on your preference I suppose.

Resocasters is an awesome album but Hal Rugg plays a pedal dobro, which is really an acoustic pedal steel.

If you are trying to give a person an overview of the big picture of dobro playing then I would go for the aforementioned The Great Dobro Sessions.

Here is another album in that vein which is a tribute to the late Tut Taylor and was put together by Jerry Douglas:

These are all tunes written by Tut and it was released several years ago. You can see there are a bunch of different players on it like The Great Dobro Sessions. It's really good. What's cool about this is Jerry and all the pickers managed to keep their mouths shut during the making of the record and when Jerry presented it to him it was a big surprise. And like Sessions, Southern Fliibuster gives one a diversity in style and instruments from all the different players. All instrumental, no vocals.

I would have to agree that Great Dobro Sessions is a winner for pure instrumental.

All that have been posted are excellent players. Some do have vocals as well. I own several of Uncle Josh Graves, the king of Dobro. His World Famous Dobro is awesome. the Amazon link is below.

Heck buy two or three. Cool

This one also has the rare treat of Mike singing.
He spent his career surrounded by greater singers, but his version of George's "Take Me" was cool.

always loved Mike's ultra-smooth vocals. Treasures Untold is another great Auldridge album.

and if you're looking for dobro AND pedal steel, this one can't be beat:
