I test drove these settings at home and will try them tonight at the gig. Guitar->VP->amp.
Note the low master gains. I also have the -10db cut on. It's still pretty clean as it stands. I like to be able to floor the pedal and not injure eardrums in the process. That's what the house sets my sound at, and it's a good limiter for me, rather than guessing, with a high volume amp, and limiting volume pedal travel. That can happen when the in ears are not worn exactly the same from gig to gig, and the preset monitor mix then becomes too loud for 9 other band members (not good). It's a low volume gig, and the boost, for some crunch at times, eliminates one more effects pedal to carry.
I'm using an Epifani 12 bass cab. Basically my bass rig but EQ'd for steel.
Test was done without picks, so things will probably brighten up a bit on stage

Hi Carl,
I have the MB500 and it has power up the wazoo🤓 Maybe too much power as the amp needs to open up a bit to get to that sweet spot. You may want to use an 8 ohm speaker and a less efficient one to tame the amp a bit. Just a thought?
Also, the Peavey LA400 I got from you is in constant use. I put The Ken Fox Burr Brown chips in the amp and it has a sweet vibe.ðŸ‘

Our keyboard player used a Behringer (there are other brands) hot spot. If I had been allowed to have the amp face me I could have sent a DI to the FOH and used the amp as a hot spot. But I think part of the problem was that not all the back line was available to everyone. I talked to the bass player at the end of the night - he hardly heard me all night.
The LA400 is a sweet amp. Do you have a Nashville 400? I'm curious how they compare.

Hi Carl,
Getting the right vibe in the PA and monitor system can be a delicate issue. Hopefully, the sound man has an open mind and is able to work with you to dial the sound, volume and mix.
I have had several Nashville 400 amps years ago and while they are a nice amp, I could not dial in the sound I was looking for. I did have a Nashville 400 that I made a new baffle board for a 12 inch speaker and that did have a nice vibe. Mojotone has a speaker reducer mounting ring that I use in my Fox amp that mounts to the 15 inch baffle and reduces the opening to 12 inch. Installs in minutes without any modification. Maybe because I play guitar also but a 12 inch speaker gets me closer to the sound I like. The reducer ring is $30.00 and is well worth the cost.
I would think a Nashville 400 with Ken Fox Burr Brown chips, reducer ring with a 12 inch EPS or Travis Toy speaker would be a nice unit. |
