I was just messing around with Panhandle rag and Decided I would try to figure out how to get the sound I hear in my head. It turned out to be a "rake". I believe its called. What ways do you guys play your rakes? Which finger, which direction, thumb?
What other techniques are also overlooked often that really add to a players approach? Thanks

For high to low rakes, I usually use the middle finger, and for low to high, I use the thumb.

Less is more is the cliche understatement of all time for tasteful playing.

Lane, do you have any issue with the fingerpick loosening or coming off during a backward rake with your 2nd finger? I do, so I mostly use a backward roll (2-1-T) instead...

My rake is probably closest to the motion of snapping your fingers, but I don't rake the melody to Panhandle, just play single or double notes mostly.

I do alot of snapping-your-fingers type rakes on this tune, and the last 5 seconds is a long, thumb only rake.

Jim, as long as the clear nail polish hasn't worn off, it stays just fine.
But I THINK I alter the angle of attack a bit, or just dig in a little less.

Nice job Pete... who would have thought that song fit so good with steel. Is a ' bring back the crowd for the second set' teaser tune.
