Did these guitars have serial #'s? If so? Where are they located?

Thanks b.

Gibson didn't put serial numbers on solid body guitars (steels included) until after they introduced the Les Paul models somewhere around 1953. So, it's entirely possible there is no number. If there is, it's likely a stamped impression on the underside. If it is indeed a 1953, it should start with the digit 3.

About the best way to guess (if no SN) is date codes on the volume and tone pots. Also, pickups and other features are pretty well documented on the Forum. You probably already know all that. Now, I'm going to go look for a SN on the Console Grand I bought Sunday.

Mine has a number stamped on the bottom, under the outside neck bridge, right along the edge by the binding. #54567. It must be a 1954.

Starting with the 5, it's most likely a 1955. Is there a space or a dash between the first two digits? If it's actually stamped 5 4567, or 5-4567, it's almost certainly from '55.

Jack,

It is stamped just like I typed it. Also, I read your post, and then mis-applied the info, haha.

There's no space, but I guess I figured that 54 was the year and it is #567 that year. I doubt they made 4,567 Console Grands that year.

I have no clue. Thanks for chiming in!!

Bobby, I have an early Gibson Console Grande which has a serial number.

GIBSON CONSOLE GRANDE (v.1b): c.1938
SN ON THE VERTICAL TUNER END

This is the only model of this 1938 GIBSON CONSOLE GRANDE which I have ever seen, except in photos.

My steel is shown in A. R. Duchossoir's book:
GIBSON ELECTRIC STEEL GUITARS 1935-1967
on p.42.

C.E., That has to be one of the most beautiful steel guitars ever built! I'll bet it has tone to spare.

Rick, I thought it was beautiful also and pleased to become the owner. The tone is excellent. I have several Gibson Console Grandes and this is one of 2 favorites.

If you enjoy photos of vintage steel guitars, you might enjoy my My Vintage Steel Guitars video below.

Several other of my Gibson steels are shown in A. R. Duchossoir's book:
