My friend asked me about this as he wants to sell it and thought it was a lap steel. Is this considered a zither? I don't think it's that valuable, saw one sold on Ebay for under $50. Thanks for any info.

This looks like something from the ukelin family... has set strings for chords and maybe on the strings nearest in the picture you play with a bar?
