I have about three computers sitting around home which are "off warranty." No longer working, operating systems that are not supported, etc.

I would just as soon not have someone harvest all the data on them for nefarious purposes. What's the safest way of getting rid of them?

Valid concern. I destroy hard drives I no longer want with a sledge hammer. I dispose of old cellphones the same way. Might be a bit "heavy-handed", pun intended, but it's effective.

The Goodwill stores around here accept electronics for 'recycling', so that's where we take old computers, stereo equipment and the like.

In order to protect personal data, remove the hard drive(s) and either keep them or destroy them separately, as Dave said.

I agree on the Goodwill option. They will reload the computer and make sure it is running as a Linux computer.
