Needing some advice here, I have a double neck sho bud non pedal steel with single coil pickups and I'm wanting to ad a 1 meg tone pot that I bought from Clinesmith to the guitar. My question is how do I wire it up and does it need anything like a cap in line or ect? Trying to replicate the old Hank Williams records sound on steel. Thanks

I wasn't sure what cap to use so I ordered a .02uf to start with . Don't know if that is right or not.

I'm also still getting a lot of hum from the pickups. I had them grounded together and to the metal screws to the bridge but it actually got better when I didn't ground the pickups to the bridge at all , but I've still got some.

Here's another diagram page. It's showing .02 mfd. cap for typical Fender style wiring and .047mfd. cap for Gibby style 2 vol, 2 tone wiring.

The cap simply controls the maximum amount of highs that will be rolled off. It's a totally passive system, so the control can't increase anything - it's only "subtractive". The value of the pot can also be changed - while a tiny bit more highs leak through with higher values some players like the "slope" or the rolloff point of different values - 1 meg, 500k or 250k are all fine, as are caps from .02uf-.1uf. Won't hurt anything at all to experiment.

As far as the hum issue goes I suggest taking it to a qualified guitar tech. It's a very common problem. If any shielding has been added to pickup cavities and isn't soldered to ground it acts like a "hum antenna", and tying multiple pickup grounds together can, depending on how the pickups are wood, create phase or ground loop issues. If you were not aware of how to wire a tone pot to start with you're probably over your head in solving hum issues - many common "solutions" that people might recommend simply make things worse.
