Bob...perhaps you could have someone to make an add on extension after you set the steel up, so it extends back past your actual knee to you lower thigh....or just let the healing happen then daily try your knee..it will improve in time. That I promise...been there

Bob its no walk in the park for sure.
I'm now 7 weeks after total knee replacement on the left knee.
The knee itself is doing well, its the swelling in the knee, calf, and especially the foot that swells up all the time. This prevents you from rolling your foot and ankle off of A & B pedals.
Total feeling has not came back to the knee area yet as well making it a little hard to feel the knee levers.

| Thanks everyone. I know it will take time. Everyone is different as to healing and use. I worked as a rehab nurse in my younger days for knees and hips but none were psg players. Fred I may give you a call in near future. Thanks Bob |

After suffering 3 meniscus tears and enduring the pain, I had my right knee replaced. Medicare took care of all of the rehab (6 weeks at home, 5 weeks at a rehab center). I have never regretted it. I have absolutely no pain, walking, skiing, and playing pedal steel. I contacted Medicare about another issue, and when I asked them why all of the rehab, and the agent told me that, when a patient does all the rehab, they don't see him again, but anyone who skips out on rehab will be back, so paying for the rehab is cheaper than not.

Jack, got that right; my sister is 64 years old and had the knee replaced. She worked very hard on her rehab. As a result, she recovered quickly and leads a very active life, though she does not play pedal steel guitar,
I think Micky's idea of having an extension made so the lever does not dig into the knee while you are recovering makes a lot of sense .
Also, as Fred mentions, lower leg and foot swelling might occur so try not to play steel over long stretches of time, Get up frequently, stand and also lie down with the leg slightly raised every now and then,
Sometimes, when one is playing, time goes by more quickly than he realizes.
