I am always looking for influences and have a strong love for the classic honky tonk steel sound. I'm looking for some info on great albums that I should try to listen to. I'd love to hear any suggestions anyone has, or any personal favorites anyone has. I seem to really like the styles of Lloyd Green and Pete Drake. Thanks for any input!

Tom Brumley plays an iconic steel guitar solo and beautiful fills with just two pedals-- and almost entirely on just two strings.
Although it is slow and fairly simple technically (although there is one tricky lick in terms of footwork agility), one can spend many hours trying to capture the emotional musicality of perhaps Tom's most famous solo (and fills) of all time.
There may be tab for it somewhere on the SGF.

charley pride in person (lloyd green on steel)
gary stewart you're not the woman you used to be (i think hal rugg?)
anything george jones from the musicor years (various awesome players, including pete drake)
ray price collection (jimmy day, buddy emmons)
ernest tubb collection (buddy emmons, buddy charleton)
doug sahm return of wayne douglas (tommy detamore)
vince gill paul franklin bakersfield (paul franklin)
ricky skaggs (bruce bouton, lloyd green, buddy emmons)
connie smith (anything with weldon myrick)
loretta lynn (anything with hal rugg)
that'll get you started for 100 bucks on itunes! |

WOW!!!! Thanks everyone so much for all the responses and links. What I've been able to get my hands on has been some fantastic stuff. Some of that Weldon Myrick playing on Connie Smith's early records that Dave suggested is some impressive picking with such a classic tone. And you guys are making me really like Lloyd Green's style more and more. I definitely have some homework to do!

That will be the day Rick. I Gave up on country music radio a long time ago, and yes you are just over the mountain from me. I'd like to get with you someday and jam. I really like playing and collaborating with other players to see their styles and technique. One of the best ways to learn in my opinion.

I have a show on communityradio.ca in Halifax, NS called "A Touch Of Texas" that features a lot of Texas country and music in that style, of course with amply doses of steel guitar. If you'd like to give it a listen it's on Saturday evenings at 7 - 9 EDT.
