Today's records usually include detailed information about the musicians, but the original records of the past usually don't have that information. You'll find name and photo of the featured singer and some liner notes about the star, that's it. The musicians remain anonymous. Looks like the question “Who is the Steel Player?†is a frequent one here on the Forum.
I have attempted to try to identify some of the players for those of you who run across a certain song and wonder about the steel player. Needless to say that this is a task that will never go anywhere near completion! The information I have collected comes either from the players themselves, from other experts who know details about the recording sessions or from research labels like Bear Family Records who reissue the old material with (not always!) exact information about the session players. You will find the song list in alphabetical order with the vocalist and the steel player. Please keep in mind that I am referring to the original version of the song, later recordings are indicated, they might have been done with different musicians! The list contains already thousands of songs, but you might still miss your favorite song - if you have information you would like to see included, you are welcome to drop me a line, I'll be more than happy to add it to the list! The same is true for errors – although I have tried to avoid entries where I have no information and the player is not identifiable (at least for me), I am sure that I may be wrong on occasion. Also, some songs made it to the list that have no audible steel at all (I simply took the info from the session list!), I have already deleted several songs and will continue as I run across those.
It is only half the fun to read about songs and musicians, so I started to link as many entries as possible to the audio tracks, as available on YouTube. Just click on the song title and you should hear the respective tune. I was suprised how much rare stuff is already available on YouTube.
Have fun looking around and listening to tons of good music!

| Thanks for your hard work, Walter. I really enjoyed the documentary "The Wrecking Crew" - it was amazing to learn about the nameless, faceless, studio pros that played on LOTS of the records I enjoyed growing up. What a shame they never got the recognition they deserved. |

Nice list, thank you so much! It is very cool to look through the list of songs & check out the musicians.
Of course, there are alot of songs that I can think of that aren't listed, as you mentioned, this is a task that will never be completed!

Walter the local union hall in Nashville use to hold all the records to everything recorded there that was a union session. All the famous stuff is union sessions. Harold Bradley use to run it but I don'T know what is going on now. All sessions had the date, personnel and label numbers. You can or could pickup a mini phone book there made especially for those in the Nashville music industry. Phone numbers that won'T appear in any other directory for those wishing to organize and book sessions. A lot has changed in 30 years since I was engineering for the producers so some kid might have threw it all away by now.
