I play the G on top. I use it a lot and it would take a big mental shift to go to D. I've tried.
I will have to try the G# raise on pedal 5 though.
Weirdly, I also own a Williams D-11 that I never play because it needs a lot of work (it is on my long to-do list). With 11 strings, I could have both, in theory. But my brain could never handle going between a D10 and D11. _________________ "You call that thing a guitar?" |

I think the D is useful if you use the phrasing that Buddy used 2 frets down from the major chord with pedal 5. I personally keep the G and lower the E to D on a knee.
Maybe a lot of people use it (D) because it has become a standard, without investigating other possibilities.
No big deal. |

I use both, but that needs clarification. I have a triple neck console, non-pedal (9 string) and the C6th neck has D on top rather than G. However on my D10 pedal steel I use G on top . I was used to having it there and have quite a few licks I like to use that requires it to be there. I tried the D on top but missed the G so much that I put it back on to stay. So I like them both but prefer to use them as I see fit. To each his own. |
