I think Randy personifies what folks like about a good wraparound.. and a good player.
A drummer buddy of mine gigged with him last night in Boerne, TX and took this photo. Cool cat..

I hear the names: Palousek, Gary Carpenter, Jim Loessburg, Rick Price, Overby, Jr. Knight, and every once in a while a guy named David Wright.
I am shocked that I don't hear the name Rinehart more often around here. He is a monster alright. He is awesome. Tell us more about him. He should be featured at the Dallas Show.

I think the reason a lot of these guys don't play the steel show is that they are working all the time. Most of the guys I know personally would much rather go play a gig. They don't want to be in a fishbowl, they just want to make a living doing what they love. _________________ Emmons/Sho~Bud/Blanton, Fender/Peavey.

Bill Terry – Thanks for posting this photo of Randy Rhinehart and his steel guitar. Is this the “Horn of Plenty
There’s a story that Randy has a great Emmons Wraparound and that every time Buddy Emmons came around Randy would have Buddy hold the leg of his steel while Randy strummed the strings. It vibrated so much and sounded so great – they named it: “The Horn of Plenty.â€
If Randy is NOT playing “The Horn of Plenty†on Bobby Flores’ “Bubbles in my Beer’ I don’t want to hear “The Horn of Plenty!!!" |

Bill,
Randy did some great licks on that "If I Ever Need A Lady" that you posted. Love that turnaround break he did.
Thanks for posting. |

Robert,
I believe that is indeed the 'Horn of Plenty', and I've heard that story as well. I think Justin has seen it up close and personal, and can probably chime in, but I've heard it's not exactly 'pristine' LOL. However it sounds great, so you tolerate the warts I suppose.
That said, I've heard Randy on other guitars, and it's the same old story we hear about all the good players, he still sounds like Randy.
Mark,
I agree, that's textbook.. He's one of those guys that was just born to play IMO. _________________ Lost Pines Studio

Yes - Randy is textbook. That's how the steel should be played. Thanks for posting "Bubbles in My Beer." We have been playing it over it and over again. A great record. The rhythm section great, too! That's Texas for you. |

Some months back,we opened for Johnny Rodriguez and Randy was with him.Randy was having a little trouble getting around so I helped him put his steel on stage.
That poor thing looked like it had been drug to the gig behind the bus but what a great tone and licks to boot.
If you get the chance, go see him. _________________ Cops aren't paid much so I steel at night. |

Yes...it's strange how his name hasn't been mentioned with the other steel "greats" ... The first I heard of him was in 1983 when my band backed Barbara Fairchild in Germany. The "stars" from Nashville in those days would sometimes do U.K. first, then off to Germany. It was financially better off for them to fly over and get a Brit band do the short tours. Barbara told me that she "WAS" married to Randy and he could do all the Emmons licks. At that time back in Nashville her band had Mike Smith on steel...Man I did my best on the tour but Randy or Mike I am not Barbara was so good to work with. She flew over with her mother in law.If we were hungry on the way back from gigs...All USAF air bases, she'd stop and get us band members KFC .... those German Autobahns can get you mighty hungry, and most of the gigs were a long way from our Frankfurt hotel.

Not a big deal, but I've seen his name spelled with a d and with a t on the end of his last name. So, is it Rinehard or Rinehart?
Does he ever get on the Forum? |
