Well Sonny, wasn't really my cup of tea, but the guy can play, that's for sure.

As far as starting on guitar first, it depends on your age and the era you come from. I'm 62, started on lap steel at age 9 and took up standard guitar later. I was at the tail end of an era when kids starting on lap steel was still kind of happening (about 1964 for me). But The Beatles, Stones, etc. pretty much put an end to that.

One of my ultimate guitar heroes and a master of the Telecaster was fellow California boy Roy Buchanan. Roy started out in the late 1940s on lap steel then moved on to standard guitar later. You could always hear that steel guitar influence in his playing.

Here is another John 5 video, doing Jerry's Breakdown but unlike his take on Sugarfoot Rag, leaving out the distortion.

He may have a whole different vibe, but when you get down to it he's still pretty much cut from the same cloth as a number of masters of the Telecaster:

Those virtuous Tele players all sound the same to my ear: I don't hear alot of emotion. Noone's like the great Clarence White. He had his own style.

Who doesn't like Redd? Great player - and he was a Stranger for awhile, but didn't fit into Merle's idea for his band and he let him go after a time. This is a quote from Merle by an acquaintance of mine, retired west coast C.F. Martin rep Joe McNamara about Redd, on the occasion when Joe was hand delivering a Merle Haggard signature model Martin to Hag in Redding, CA a number of years ago:

“...cause I want to do the REAL country music, and Redd, he’s great, but he’s always playin that stuff, it’s kinda like rock and roll – I like rock and roll, but we don’t do too much of it."

Redd - too much rock and roll for Merle! Wink

You'll get no argument from me on Clarence White, might be my ultimate guitar hero. But there are of course many, many great Tele players. It's one of the reasons why the guitar has its own forum. It's a pretty vast subject to be distilled to one thread in the "Music"* section of The Steel Guitar Forum. Whoa!

* I just noticed this thread is in Steel Players though it would seem more appropriate in Music.

Since we're naming names, it's pretty much required in a Tele thread: James Burton.

And yeah - Vince - one of my very favorites. Reminds me of Mark Knopfler in that he's one of those guys where you know after about three notes who it is even with no prior idea of who is playing.

I normally see Red V a couple of time s a month,,,we live in the same 'hood so to speak,,,,LOL. I didn't intend to start naming names,,,but since we did lets not forget Danny Gatton or even Bill Kirchen,,,(normally enjoy Bill pretty often also,,,another Austin picker,,,,I'm fortunate to live in a "good 'hood",,,,LOL),,,,and Erv,,,not to take anything from Red,,,there are several around here that can grace the stage with Red.

Bill Lowe posited a video above with Johnny Hiland.

Bill - I opted to click on it, but after all these years of being a member here I came to the realization some time ago that if you just throw a YouTube link out there with no description about what it is in your post, you'll be lucky if 10% of the members following this thread bother to click on it.

I totally missed that but I went back and watched!! I know we got off the road so to speak but I love watching really good pickers no matter what they are playing. I play with a thumb pick and fingers but I don't know if I could wear them fake nails like Brent and Johnny?? Laughing

To my ears, there is an apparent Junior Brown influence in his playing, especially on 'Sugarfoot Rag'. Take special note of the frequent above the nut string choking...Speaking of hot playing, has anyone viewed the video of that fifteen year old guitarist performing Brent Mason's 'Hotwire'? Name slips my mind but the kid definitely nails it!

If you go to a nail salon they put a hardener on your nails so you play with your own nails. It's just a trick to use
if your own nails aren't hard enough. I quit it and cut my nails to use a flat pick. Big mistake. Fortunately they will grow back.

You mean Dylan Rosson? He has been in Nashville a while now and plays with Scotty McCreery. Dylan comes from a very talented family. I played some with his family when he was about 12-13. https://youtu.be/zYPXchZpXvk
