I was thinking it would be neat if someone were to mill a slot down the side of an aluminum neck or even mill the old rope or checkerboard inlay patterns in the aluminum. They could even route the slot and inlay a strip of wood or pearl right into the aluminum. Lots of great options would be

You could certainly etch it, chemically. A lot of the boutique stompbox builders do this to their enclosures.

Lynn Owsley's "Texas Troubadour" Derby steel has special engraved end plates.

I don't see a lot of inlaid bells either.

A few years ago I used a multi speed router to remove a very thin etching from a SHO - BUD PRO3 ally neck and put in some rope inlay it looked amazing but too add you need to be very carful not to tear the ally, I found it worked better with the router set at high speed.

I think it would look great to have the side of a neck jeweled and have what would be the usual inlay pattern high polished. Would also look neat to have some faux gem stone inlays or something along those lines. Heck even a strip of brass or copper?

i think a solid gold neck with engraving and silver and turquoise inlay along the side would look good.
and maybe diamonds for fret markers would be cool. you could see them in the dark.

No reason the sides of an aluminum neck can't be pimped up a bit with some inlay. The pic below obviously is not of a neck, but the process is the same.

Chris Lucker's mildly sarcastic point is a good one -- the primary reason for putting an aluminum neck on steel guitar is not for it's looks, but rather the tonal qualities it adds.

I've heard though, that gold, turquoise and diamonds all have really great tonal qualities too, especially if the guitar is black, and it's Wednesday

Bob and chris are old friends, almost brothers. Bob wrote me about it last night in a private response. Bob is a great guy, modest with a wonderful sense of humor. chris is the same. Two peas in a pod...
