I'm thinking about changing from a D to a G on the 1st string C6th neck. What gauge should I use? _________________ Emmons PP D10 8X5, GFI Ultra D10,both are setup up "Emmons" style. Quilter 202 Tone Block, Nashville 400, Milkman 85, Stewart PA200, BW and JBL speakers, Profex II

I have always used a .010 for the first string (G) on the C6 neck of my '73 push/pull, for no other reason than a .010 was the standard 1st string in the Emmons C6 sets when I first purchased the instrument in the late seventies. It works for me.
Never even heard of people tuning the first string to D until I joined this Forum a few years back. Ignorance is bliss. |

I would give a 12 a try. That's what I use for the G# on my E9th neck. |

The .012 is what comes with the George L's C6th sets (and many other brands).
Even though the D is probably more common most sets still come with the .012, instead of the .017 for the D.
I still use the high G. I've tried the D several times but retune back to the G. _________________ GFI Ultra Keyless S-10 with pad (Black of course) TB202 amp, Hilton VP, Steelers Choice sidekick seat

I have both on my Whitney, and Williams. My "D" is a 0.16P, and my "G" is a 0.12. |

Keep in mind that you might have to tweak any knees or pedals that might use that string, due to tension changes _________________ --carl
