Hello my name is Jordan and I just joined the forum in search of some answers. Lately I've been wanting to learn to play the steel guitar after one of my friends let my play on his, after that I went searching for a steel to buy and found I wanted a lap guitar. I found a morrell custom 8. Here are the specs:

Thickness: 1 3/4"
Fret Board: 22 Fret, Rosewood
Scale Length: 25"

Tuners: Grover Sta-Tite 18:1
Bridge: Chrome Hipshot
Jack: 1/4" Side Mount
Backing: Felt
two Dimarzio PAF8 humbucker pickups

It is an 8 string and priced at $800, Is this guitar really worth it? And if not what is a better guitar for the same price or less? If anyone has any info on this guitar it would really help because frankly I have found anything on it.

No. $800 could get you a much nicer guitar than a Morrell. Look up Ram Guitars or Georgeboards, for example. There is a link button in the upper RH corner of this page. I'd check out the builders here, before spending money on a Morrell.

Morrell steels are not highly regarded.

In one word: No.

Go to the "For Sale Steel Guitars" section on this Forum often, and check what is available. If you have $800.00 to spend and really want an 8-string, you would be hard pressed finding a finer instrument than this one:

RAM Guitars in the Chicago area builds instruments in that price range that are hard to beat. They are both stunningly beautiful and of the highest quality.

I would recommend starting with a vintage 6-string for about half that price (or less). I have several classic Gibson lap steels, most purchased at auction on eBay. The average cost of these 11 instruments was about $380.00. They will hold their value. The Morrell? Not so much.

+1 on Jack's suggestion about that Sierra 8 string. Those are really nice guitars and that one's a bargain for sure!!

I would take it as a sign that such a nice guitar happens to be available and priced very fairly right when you are looking... talking about that Sierra, of course

Those Sierras are amazing guitars. I think MSRP was around $1,400. I used to own serial # 037, until I traded it for a Fender AVRI Telecaster. Check out forum member Doug Beaumier's videos on the Sierra Lapsteel.

Jordan, here's a brand-new 8-string within your budget:

I have one of Ron's guitars that I purchased used from a member of this Forum, and can attest to its exceptional quality. Not only is the workmanship impeccable, but the sound and playability of the RAM Speakeasy is top-notch.

You could not possibly go wrong dealing with Ron Mielzynski. He has been extremely helpful to me answering my questions and assisting with my setup, even though I am not the original owner of the instrument.
