I'm trying to gussy up my newly-acquired Stringmaster and am not sure how best to clean the tuning pans. I tried to use Mother's but there's just too much grease and other accumulated gunk in there. Using q-tips mostly involves moving grease around rather than cleaning it up.

What do you all recommended for loosening/lifting all that gunk in there?

I'd try naptha (lighter fluid).

If it's me, I would get a bucket and submerge the tuner pans in the naphtha. Get in there with a soft toothbrush and it will be short work.
But I admit---I work with naphtha from 55 gallon drums (literally) so my approach to it is never sparing.

It is a relatively mild and non-aggressive solvent so it will not mar, etch, or do any sort of nasty stuff.

Although I'm used to plenty of skin contact, do as I say & not as I do---wear gloves.
