Gene Phillips's wiki says

Quote:
He joined the St Louis bands of Dewey Jackson and Jimmy Powell and was later taught lap steel guitar by Floyd Smith.

Floyd's wiki points to this Andy Kirk recording:

...which I can't say does much for me.

Your Steelin' the Blues is a whole lot more musical. I'd lean toward speculating that it is in fact Gene P on the steel guitar.

That is Gene Phillips on steel. He also played standard guitar.

He made a lot of recordings under his own name in Southern California in the late 1940s and 1950s in a R and B/jump blues style. There's at least one CD available.

He also played steel on a couple of Wynonie Harris's recordings.

I think this is really cool! Love the 40s/50s jump blues style with piano, upright bass, sax, drums etc and it's refreshing to hear someone playing steel guitar phrasing (if a bit crudely) in that style. Nice and raw.

Thanks for sharing - loved it.

Yes, it's raw... and I like it! He's very good with the "boo-wah" tone control too.
