A bunch of folks already mentioned come to my mind as well (George Jones, Narvel Felts, Justin Tubb, Gene Watson to name a few), BUT...

I'd like to have had one night backing Red Sovine

The fifth Beatle! Of course, Mike! Smile (Come to think of it, did they ever use pedal steel on any single track? I know there was a little lap steel here and there, but not PSG?)

Well, Jim, no one's ever accused me of being a "Beatle Fanatic", so this might not be definitive; I think the closest thing to PSG on a Beatle's recording might be the Paul McCartney & Wings recording of "Sally G." with Lloyd Green.

I've been fortunate to play with some really good country honky-tonkers (none of them are well known), but I've also had a lot of fun playing with rock bands. A dream-come-true for me would be to play steel with NRBQ or Rockpile or Little Feat.

I almost had the pedal steel gig with Led Zeppelin, but they gave it to Jimmy Page instead.

I'll go with Emmylou Harris.

Yeah, Gary would have been one of my picks, too! Others would have been Bill Phillips, Narvel Felts, Rex Allen Jr., and Stan Hitchcock.

I actually did play with Bill Phillips once, and Narvel Felts twice. Both really nice guys who generously tolerated me.

I DID get to play a few gigs with Charlie Daniels & Marshall Tucker. Here I am playing my 80 PP with Charlie, Marshall Tucker, Steve Cropper, & Doug Supernaw (back towards camera) In Clearwater, Florida about 15 years ago.

2 guitars, bass, & drums onstage were from Marshall Tucker. The others are Charlie, Doug Supernaw, & Steve Cropper's leg can be seen right behind Doug.

A little post Beatle trivia..After they split they all recorded solo projects....Lloyd Green and Buddy Emmons both played on Paul McCartneys Nashville recordings....Sally G is the most prominent hit from that project.

Pete Drake produced and played on Ringo Starrs "Beaucoup The Blues" lp.

George Harrison hired Pete Drake for his "All Things Shall Come To Pass" lp.
His solo on "My Sweet Lord" is legendary....He played an electrified dobro through a pignose amp for that solo......He also gave Frampton the talk box he demonstrates in the clip below.....The rest of that story is history. Bill West built those units for Pete after the "Forever" hit and they sold them well into the 70's....Joe Walsh got his from Bill West during his James Gang touring days while visiting Dottie and Bill at their home in Nashville.

Even after all these years I had no idea about some of the things you listed Paul. I have kind of a neat Joe Walsh memory if I may. I grew up wanting to be a rock guitarist. In the early 70's I went to see Joe in Fort Worth when he was with the James Gang standing 20 feet from him at that concert. Well, after years of being into Ham radio, I was talking to some friends and Joe, who's been a Ham for many years gives me a call on two different nights. You can imagine how excited I was. We talked for about 15 minutes and he had a big laugh when I told him how I had run the needle through Funk 49 trying to learn every little nuance.

I can still hear Funk 49 and In My Garden.

I did not know that was a Dobro on My Sweet Lord. Thru a Pignose!

i hear you, joachim. ha ha it's almost a form of plagiarism i've run into myself.

interesting to hear the emmons version. sometimes certain takes just feel better than others, and though buddy is always great, as a whole it lacked something.

Robert, you didn't have to take off your post, I just felt the need to say what I said. Surprised
I have a Denny Laine record called "Blue Nights" where the session credits say: various uncredited Nashville musicians, instead of Wings members.
Of course he lists Buddy playing steel.
